Working while studying

Working while studying can be helpful in many ways. You can earn extra money to help with living and travel costs as well as meet new people, network and be part of the community.

How many hours can you work?

On a student visa (Subclass 500), you can usually work up to 40 hours per fortnight when your course is in session and unlimited hours during the study break. Please refer to the Department of Home Affairs guidelines for more information on working rights and restrictions in Australia.

The student visa work hours restrictions have been temporarily relaxed until 30 June 2023. All ongoing students as well as new student arrivals and secondary applicants are able to work more than 40 hours a fortnight in any sector of the economy and work before their course of study commences. After the 30 June 2023, the number of hours a Student visa holder will be allowed to work will again be capped. The number of hours a Student visa holder works, ensures that Students focus on obtaining a quality Australian education and qualification.
