Due to the convenience of having smaller cities, everything is close by and the cost of living in Tasmania is economical.

Cost of living and budgeting

Your money can go further when living in Tasmania. It is a great idea to work out a weekly budget that includes your income from savings, part-time work and any family support as well as expected costs.

The Australian Government advises that you should have around A$21,500 available to you before coming to Australia for living expenses for a single person for 12 months.

For more visit the Department of Home Affairs.

Things to consider in your weekly living costs are:

All the costs below are approximate only and in Australian Dollars (AUD).

Rent will be one of your biggest expenses. With a whole house roughly costing around $550 a week so you could be paying anywhere from $120 to $250 a week if you are living in shared accommodation or single room.

Other weekly expenses to think about.

Utility Bills (water electricity, gas) – $20 to $30
Internet – $15 to $25
Phone – $5 to $25
Public Transport – $10 to $15
Grocery Items – $70-$150
Food and entertainment (eating out, watching movies etc.) – $50-$150

To make budget friendly choices, here are some ideas:

  • Eating can be cheaper at home if you do a little bit of meal preparation.
  • To keep costs low, buy fruit and vegetables that are in season.
  • Tinned and frozen produce can also be a great alternative and won’t perish as quickly.
  • You could cook food in bulk and refrigerate/freeze it. This way it will last you a few days, and you won’t need to think about it when you are working on getting your assignment in.
  • When at the supermarket, usually the supermarket brands are a bit cheaper than the better known ones.
