International Student Ambassadors for 2023

Aashish Upadhyaya

From Nepal, Aashish recently moved to Tasmania for his Master studies and is currently undertaking his Master in Professional accounting and Services from Australian National Institute of Management and commerce (IMC).

Moving to Tasmanian is the best decision Aashish has made as he loves to be in nature and Tasmanian is a perfect combination with both sea and mountains.

In his spare time, Aashish loves to travel and recently visited Launceston to get know more about Tasmania. Aashish enjoys outdoor activities such as camping, trekking, hiking and cycling and as he gets to know more about Tasmania with many of these activities being added to his to do list whilst in Tasmania.

Kyi Phyu Sin

From Myanmar, Kyi is currently studying medicine at the University of Tasmania.

Kyi grew up in Myanmar and studied in Malaysia for almost five years before coming to Tasmania to continue her studies. She thinks Tasmania is absolutely beautiful and provides an ideal study environment, support systems, and opportunities for networking.

She considers studying abroad as one of the best opportunities to interact and connect with people from different cultures and backgrounds.

Lewis Ooi

From Malaysia, Lewis is currently pursuing a Master of Professional Accounting at the University of Tasmania.

Away from his studies, Lewis serves the president of BESST (Business and Economics Student Society of Tasmania) at the University of Tasmania.

Mesfin Woldegebriel

From Ethiopia, Mesfin is currently in his third year studying Education at the University of Tasmania.

Mesfin loves interacting with different cultures and having only recently moved to Launceston, he is already in love with Launceston stating the people are nice and friendly. He also enjoys seeing the beauty of the city’s historical buildings.

Mesfin understands that leaving home and traveling miles away from family and friends might be hard at first, but believes you will grow to appreciate the new experiences that will come your way.

A tip from Mesfin: Do not hesitate to reach out for the university’s support when needed. More importantly, try to find a balance between your study and having fun whenever you can.

Yuanjun (Janie) Zhang

From China, Janie is pursuing a Master's degree in Laboratory Medicine at the University of Tasmania.

Based in Launceston, Janie says this is where she finds inner peace and can fully concentrate on her studies.

Away from her studies, Janie enjoys socialising with people from various countries and backgrounds.

Pulsokunreangsy (Pul) Khut

From Cambodia, Pul is currently completing a Master of Information Technology and Systems at the University of Tasmania and has a keen interest in artificial intelligence.

Pul enjoys playing video games, listening to podcasts as well as keeping up to date with the current state of technology.

The quiet and relaxing environment, delicious seafood, and astonishing landscapes are things that Pul noticed immediately after moving to Tasmania.

As an international student, Pul empathises with the difficulties that some students might face. From his experience living in Tasmania and volunteering, he hopes to assist students so that they can have a wonderful time here in Tasmania.

Ying He

From China, Ying is a current postgraduate student at the University of Tasmania who is majoring in Accounting and minoring in Business Management.

Growing up in China listening to David Bowie and Techno, reading Edgar Allen Poe and Haruki Murakami, Ying was always curious about cultures, languages, and arts from different countries.

Ying was first attracted by Tasmania for its stunning landscape and the beauty of nature. After arriving in Launceston in February 2022, Ying was impressed by the Tasmanian hospitality.

After a short amount of time living and studying in Tasmania, Ying has already made lots of new friends from diverse backgrounds and has grown a strong love and sense of belonging to the beautiful island.

Ruchika Kumarage

From Sri Lanka, Ruchika is pursuing a Master's in Professional Accounting at the University of Tasmania.

If he had to describe himself, Ruchika would say that he is a people person who enjoys having a positive influence on others around him. Ruchika looks to make the most of any opportunity to become engaged in the Tasmanian community and help others.

When he is not at work or university, you can find him at the gym, because he is a big sports enthusiast. In fact, he even represented Sri Lanka at the South Asian Games in 2018!

Ruchika hopes to create a welcoming environment for international students studying in Tasmania.

Sujin (Sue) Kim

Originally from South Korea, Sue is studying a Master of Information Technology and Systems at the University of Tasmania.

After deciding to study in Australia, Sue investigated universities and discovered that Tasmania was a great option for international students. Now she is completely in love with Tasmania.

Sue can’t wait to tell everyone about Tasmania's incredible natural beauty as well as the many opportunities it offers for her career in the future.

Sue is really excited to meet other international students and share her new journey.

Ijaz Careem

From Sri Lanka, Ijaz is currently studying a Bachelor of Laws at the University of Tasmania.

Being from a small island nation in South Asia, Tasmania has been his second home away from home for the past 3 years and he hopes that everyone who comes to Tasmania feels the same and is supported throughout their stay in Tasmania!

Muhammad Zuhaib

From Pakistan, Zuhaib is currently studying a Diploma of Nursing at TasTAFE.

Zuhaibs ambition is to facilitate and ensure the social inclusion and economic participation of individuals, families, groups, or communities.

Zuhaib is passionate about promoting and advocating for social justice, which is one of the reasons he is active in community work.

Hue (Amber) Nguyen

From Vietnam, Amber is currently undertaking a Master of Information Technology and Systems at the University of Tasmania, majoring in Artificial Intelligence and Data Intelligence. Since moving to Tasmania from Melbourne a year ago, Amber wants people to know that moving here was one of the best decisions she has ever made.

As an international student, Amber understands the challenges and difficulties international students must deal with, especially when they move to a new city. Amber is more than happy to share her experiences living, studying, and working in Tasmania, and make new friends to explore more and more “hidden gems” with her.

In her spare time, Amber loves to have some ice cream and walking along the Constitution Dock at the Hobart waterfront. She loves to breathe in the fresh sea air every morning and enjoy the balanced lifestyle where she can be close to nature and still have a great city life. Amber loves to explore every corner of the city and be surprised with what she finds in lovely local stores, which she calls “hidden gems”.

Amber believes that the beautiful island of Tasmania has a lot to offer to international students.
